Pollen type: Calluna type.

Comparison remarks: Distinguished from Erica type by the rough exine. Pollen in tetrahedral tetrads (arranged in pyramidal groups of 4) is characteristic of most Ericaceae, buta few species have irregular tetrads, or composite single-grain pollen.

Morphology (unacetolysed pollen): Pollen united in groups of 4 (tetrads). Size class: medium (30-50 μm). Shape in equatorial view: round or irregularly round and different at each pole. Shape in polar view: round. Aperture numbers: 3. Aperture type: furrows with pores. Surface pattern: granular. Exine section: thin to medium (no rods visible) and with other projections.

Bee pollen pellet colour: Brown or beige (Sawyer 1981).
