IGNS collection number: NZGS4959.
Botanical classification: Class Magnoliopsida; Order Ericales; Family Ericaceae.
Common name: Spanish heath.
Pollen type: Erica type.
Comparison remarks: Exine may bear isolated round verrucae. Pollen in tetrahedral tetrads (arranged in pyramidal groups of 4) is characteristic of most Ericaceae, buta few species have irregular tetrads, or composite single-grain pollen.
Morphology (unacetolysed pollen): Pollen united in groups of 4 (tetrads). Size class: medium (30-50 μm). Shape in equatorial view: round or irregularly round and different at each pole. Shape in polar view: round. Aperture numbers: 3. Aperture type: furrows with pores. Surface pattern: smooth or indefinite, or isolated dots due to spines or other projections (occasional verrucae). Exine section: thin to medium (no rods visible) and with other projections. Other structural features: cell contents granular.
Bee pollen pellet colour: Orange.
