Botanical classification: Class Magnoliopsida; Order Fagales; Family Nothofagaceae.

Common name: Red beech.

Pollen type: Fuscospora.

Comparison remarks: Three other species formerly included in Nothofagus (F. cliffortioides, F. solandri, and F. truncata) have similar pollen. Pollen of the other New Zealand former Nothofagus species, Lophozonia menziesii, differs in several ways, notably in being larger and lacking thicker exine around the furrows.

Morphology (unacetolysed pollen): Size class: small (20-30 μm). Shape in equatorial view: flattened oval (oblate). Shape in polar view: round, or multisided/multilobed or irregular. Aperture numbers: 4-6, or 7-12. Aperture type: furrows only. Surface pattern: granular, or isolated dots due to spines or other projections. Exine section: with very small spines or projections (<1 µm). Other structural features: thickened or projecting edges to apertures and cell contents granular.

Bee pollen pellet colour: Light yellow.
