IGNS collection number: NZGS4844.
Botanical classification: Class Magnoliopsida; Order Myrtales; Family Myrtaceae.
Common name: Kanuka.
Pollen type: Kunzea, or Leptospermum type (if not distinguished from Leptospermum).
Comparison remarks: Furrows join in polar areas. Slightly smaller, less concave-sided (in polar view), and with smoother exine than manuka pollen.
Morphology (unacetolysed pollen): Size class: very small (<20 μm). Shape in equatorial view: flattened oval (oblate). Shape in polar view: triangular/rounded triangular. Aperture numbers: 3. Aperture type: furrows with pores, or united or irregular furrows. Surface pattern: smooth or indefinite. Exine section: thin to medium (no rods visible). Other structural features: intine swollen beneath apertures.
Bee pollen pellet colour: Light yellow (Walsh 1978).
