IGNS collection number: NZGS4774, NZGS4775.

Botanical classification: Class Magnoliopsida; Order Ranunculales; Family Ranunculaceae.

Common name: Buttercups.

Pollen type: Ranunculaceae.

Comparison remarks: Furrows either 3 meridionally arranged (tricolpate), or a greater number arranged in a net over the whole grain (pericolpate). A distinctive feature of Ranunculus pollen is the tiny spinules, around each of which the exine has an "areole" lacking rods (columellae).

Morphology (unacetolysed pollen): Size class: small (20-30 μm), or medium (30-50 μm). Shape in equatorial view: round or irregularly round. Shape in polar view: round. Aperture numbers: 3, or 4-6. Aperture type: furrows only. Surface pattern: granular, or isolated dots due to spines or other projections. Exine section: with layer of close, thin rods and with very small spines or projections (<1 µm). Other structural features: granules or projections scattered on apertures and cell contents granular.

Bee pollen pellet colour: Yellow.
