IGNS collection number: NZGS4777.

Botanical classification: Class Magnoliopsida; Order Saxifragales; Family Grossulariaceae.

Common name: Flowering currant.

Pollen type: Ribes.

Comparison remarks: Pollen of other Ribes species (e.g. R. nigrum, blackcurrant) is similar. Each pore is surrounded by a band of thicker exine which is broader than that seen in Plantago. The pollen is also similar to that of the NZ native Dactylanthus taylorii which is however now extremely rare.

Morphology (unacetolysed pollen): Size class: medium (30-50 μm). Shape in equatorial view: round or irregularly round. Shape in polar view: round. Aperture numbers: 7-12. Aperture type: pores only. Surface pattern: smooth or indefinite. Exine section: thin to medium (no rods visible). Other structural features: thickened or projecting edges to apertures.

Bee pollen pellet colour: White to grey (Sawyer 1981).
