Taraxacum officinale, pollen pellet |
IGNS collection number: NZGS4799.
Botanical classification: Class Magnoliopsida; Order Asterales; Family Compositae.
Common name: Dandelion.
Pollen type: Taraxacum type.
Comparison remarks: Spines on ridges ("fenestrate"). Yellow oil often present. Some distinction can be made between pollen of the various "dandelion" plant genera and species, but this is a specialist task.
Morphology (unacetolysed pollen): Size class: medium (30-50 μm). Shape in equatorial view: round or irregularly round, or flattened oval (oblate). Shape in polar view: multisided/multilobed or irregular. Aperture numbers: 3. Aperture type: furrows with pores. Surface pattern: isolated dots due to spines or other projections. Exine section: with very small spines or projections (<1 µm), or with other projections.
Bee pollen pellet colour: Orange.
