Comparison remarks: There are two main pollen morphological types in Caryophyllaceae: tricolpate (Spergularia type) and periporate (Stellaria type). S. media is mostly tricolpate, occasionally tetracolpate.
Morphology (unacetolysed pollen): Size class: small (20-30 μm). Shape in equatorial view: elongate (prolate). Shape in polar view: round, or triangular/rounded triangular. Aperture numbers: 3, or 4-6. Aperture type: furrows only. Surface pattern: smooth or indefinite, or granular. Exine section: medium with spaced rods.
Bee pollen pellet colour: Yellow (Sawyer 1981).
