Comparison remarks: There are two main pollen morphological types in Caryophyllaceae: tricolpate (Spergularia type) and periporate (Stellaria type).
Morphology (unacetolysed pollen): Size class: large (50-100 μm). Shape in equatorial view: round or irregularly round. Shape in polar view: round, or multisided/multilobed or irregular. Aperture numbers: more than 12. Aperture type: pores only. Surface pattern: net or pitted. Exine section: medium with spaced rods. Other structural features: granules or projections scattered on apertures.
Bee pollen pellet colour: Grey.
